This session is everything about why I do what I do.
Robyn (the incredible-in-her-own-right-long-time-idol-of-mine-and-friend) has three beautiful children with her husband Andy. Her eldest has now moved away to study, the first duckling to dip her toe out of the nest; their home which is filled with confidence and creativity and all the love and space and perception and permission to be whoever you are.
Robyn wanted to document them together in the last days of this precious first phase of family life, to mark how big this changing tide felt to her heart. She wanted a right now picture of their afternoons on the deck, they way the 5 of them (and the lovable furry 6th) had filled their home to its corners with ideas and songs, the room that would soon be claimed by a younger sister.
Jeff Buckley once said, in an interview, “Be awake enough to see where you are at any given time and how that is beautiful and has poetry inside.”
People are sometimes more inclined to book sessions when their children are younger, and potentially more amenable to the idea (or less aware), as well as less self conscious. Suggest to many teenagers that you wish to have a family photography session and you might receive groans in response. But, especially if it is done in the comfort and emotional safety of your own home, and we are respectful of where they are at, the kids will inevitably relax and just be themselves, you can all enjoy and celebrate each other where you are at right now, and what could be more beautiful than that?
