I sometimes hear from clients who are interested in having family photographs in their home, but are also worried that their home might not be ‘magazine worthy’ or require some monumental tidying and cleaning effort for which many busy parents can’t summon the energy.
i can (and do) tell families that it doesn’t matter how tidy or perfect their home is, that they don’t need to deck out their homes with an Instagrammable selection of indoor plants or order a new fancy sofa in order to be somehow more eligible to have an at-home photography session; they just need to bring themselves and the love that they have for each other and let me worry about the rest.
These images are from a session earlier this year where I photographed a family of four during a teaching workshop, not in a home at all. I made these photographs for the totally gorgeous family of Ashlee, including two active young boys, in a single conference room, using a single window and one chair, and afterwards we moved to an ordinary small Melbourne park directly across the road. I thought that rather than talk about how much it doesn’t matter ‘where’ you are photographed, or explain how I can show as little or as much of a setting as need be depending on lighting and mood and personality, I thought it might also be helpful to showcase the session of this beautiful family and how much love they were able to fit into the corner of one room, and, as it rather randomly turned out on the day, a shopping trolley we found abandoned in the park (how Melbourne is that?).
And not only did we capture some truly precious moments, we had a ton of fun doing it (as you can probably tell from the photos). No stress whatsoever, family memories: done.
