LEARN WITH SARAH

Journeying
on film

In an age where modern life seems to be asking more of us, demanding we be ever busier and more distracted, the creation of photographic art on film offers itself up as an antidote.

We are able to slow down, experience, and press the shutter from within a moment, rather than remaining outside of it.

This is why I choose to shoot and teach the art of analogue photography.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely you’ve also sensed that there’s something special about film.

Working in film has allowed my process to become more trusting and more present in each moment, emanating more from an artistic flow state than a place of control.

Less mind, more heart and body and soul.

'This new mindfulness extends to an appreciation of things that are made by hand, not in a factory, and with this comes a desire for the imperfect, the original and the unique."

A COLLECTIVE RETREAT,

19-20 APRIL 2024

Join a group of 15 women artists across 2 full days on a stunning Mornington Peninsula property.

Feed both body and spirit, with nourishing chef-prepared meals, photo walks in spectacular Flinders, live shoots, come alive in an early morning ocean swim and/or rest in the hot spa under the stars, alongside a group of like-minded film-loving artists, and depart re-inspired to continue your own artistic practice.

With only 1 retreat planned in 2024, enjoy the flexibility of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure payment format, with both mentor and mentee places available, and the option to attend day sessions without accommodation costs.

RETREAT COST:

Mentor place $700

Mentee place $1200

ADD-ON ACCOMODATION FEE 1-3 nights:

Private King Room $400

Shared Twin King-Single Room $300

Shared 6 bed Bunk Room $200

One of the aims of this retreat is to make a nurturing and rich learning experience available to more attendees at a lower cost than is usual for these types of collective experiences. The idea is that a shared mentoring approach can make space for this in a unique and transformative way. This retreat aims to have all learning together, in an atmosphere of non-judgement, shared experience and growth. Modern life has us separated and silo’d in ways that can be detrimental to both mental health and creative development. We are stronger and more inspired when supported in community, and encouraged onwards in pursuit of our own personal goals and projects by like-minded artists.

What is a Mentor place?

If you are interested in taking a mentor place (with its accompanying discount) the only official mentoring requirement is to share one 20 minute presentation (in your own style, with or without accompanying materials such as slideshows or print artifacts) during the retreat. However, being a mentor may then also open you up to questions and casual discussion across the retreat, following on from your topic of sharing. Although there are no restrictions to enrolments for the mentor places, it will be more transformative for all if the mentors have a well-considered message, experience or practice to share, and are reasonably experienced film shooters. If you are enrolling as a mentor, you will need to describe two topics that you would be comfortable to share during the retreat, to help me allow space for a variety of subject matter.

What is a MentEE place?

To be a ‘mentee’ simply means ‘someone who is mentored’. We all are, and continue to need to be, both mentor and mentee, across different stages of life. Something that i’ve lived is that learning is circular, not linear. Coming to recognise these stages is a skill in itself. Also, there simply isn’t time across 2 days for every participant to take the floor, although i did try to make that work from a scheduling point of view!

 Mentoring

My mentoring is tailored to your specific learning needs, and the next step after booking is the completion of a questionnaire that allows us to dig deeper into what those needs are, so that you can get the most from the learning experience. Once you’ve submitted the questionnaire, your mentoring can be scheduled any time from 7 days after that submission date (to allow me time to adapt the program to suit).

Just some of what we can cover includes exposure, film stocks, cameras and style, shooting professionally as a lifestyle photographer, capturing your own family on film, and expanding your creative repertoire with techniques multi exposures. I have over 12 years experience as a photographer, more than half of that exclusively on film.

Mentoring rates are $350 per hour over Zoom, or $950 for three hours (if booked together), which can be taken in single hourly sessions OR all at once - as a half day in-person mentoring session.

A 1 hour live demo can be added onto the half day in-person session, at an extra cost of $550 for a single model, or $700 for a family. The reason for this is that I will be shooting and processing the film.

I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all model for mentoring. My role should not be to encourage your work to look like mine, but to help you unearth work that will be true to you. You are a unique expression of life in the universe. Let’s make that your starting point and your true north destination. And let’s do it with the authenticity of film.
